Noah ‘Eat Wild Chef’@ Alley Pad Studio

On Wednesday & Thursday, October 5 & 6th, Visual Artist Siobhan Humston will be co-hosting with England’s exciting young Chef Noah ‘Eat Wild Chef’, one of Vancouver’s first POP-UP RESTAURANT experiences! The focus is on organic, locally grown food combined to make amazing taste experiences but it’s the coupling of Chef Noah’s experience and the setting of an amazing 1000 square foot warehouse style studio with jazz pianist Gregory Shea, that will make this event something that you don’t want to miss!!

$40 includes a three course meal, live music & a preview of fresh new paintings.Check out http://www.guestaurant.com/eventdetail?799-Info for the menu details and to reserve your seat for the evening. Easy reservation through Guestaurant and Paypal!

~Noah (EatWild Chef) trained in London, England and has worked at some of the best gastro pubs in the UK. His main emphasis is keeping to the seasons, using only locally sourced, organic fare.
With his food events he is also eager to break boundaries from the traditional restaurant types, “Big, bold, artistic spaces by day can be transformed by night into atmospherically lit, cauldrons of social activity”.

~Visual artist Siobhan Humston has resided in the live/work studio ALLEY PAD STUDIO, a former clothing factory in the Commercial Drive neighbourhood since 2008 and has been hostd dozens of home concerts, book readings, film night and open studios. With its sixteen foot ceilings, one-thousand square foot studio space and back lane entrance, it is a loft in the true sense of the word: spacious, unique and raw. She has shown her work in solo & group exhibitions in Canada, USA & Europe and is represented in Canada by Herringer Kiss Gallery in Calgary and Parts Gallery in Toronto.

~Pianist Gregory Shea has performed professionally for many years in clubs and aboard five star luxury ships, both as a band leader and as a solo guest entertainer. Mr. Shea now resides in Vancouver where he performs as a solo lounge pianist in many upscale hotels, offering audiences a wide variety of classic jazz standards and ole style New Orleans blues delivered in the tradition of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Dr. John. His soulful tunes add spice to any dish.

POP-UP RESTAURANTS, a brief synopsis from some UK press

“Does restaurant quality food need to be confined to the traditional restaurant model? The answer is quickly becoming no. With the influx of pop-up restaurants and roving supper clubs, the landscape of New York’s dining scene seems to be shifting. Pop-ups give temporary homes to novel ideas and unique talent that may not have the resources to plunk down capital on a permanent home.

A pop-up restaurant is a temporary restaurant installation. It could be a try out for a more permanent restaurant, something more like a “food exhibit”, or a one-night stand.”

“You never know what to expect at pop-up restaurants. They are intimate and, usually, informal. You eat only what the chef loves to cook, and you sit wherever there is space on the tables. Since late 2008, London has seen a profusion of pop-ups, popular not only because they represent good value for money but also because they open only briefly in places where you would not normally go, such as Frank’s Bar on the 10th floor of a multistorey car-park in Peckham.”

~EMILY O’HARE, for THE TELEGRAPH

“Although hot in London, these underground eateries are not new. In the US, roving supper clubs such as The Ghetto Gourmet and Red Box Bistro have sizzling reputations and serious waiting lists. In Cuba, paladares are as much part of the culture as cigars and mojitos. It’s tempting to think that modern supper clubs are just glorified dinner parties, but the unstoppable American Jim Haynes proves this is a myth. He has been running a weekly restaurant from his apartment in Paris for 30 years and has seen 130,000 people pass though his doors.

There’s something both anarchic and liberating about just going for it and when you start off in an underground fashion (no fire doors, drinks licence etc). There is a huge amount of trust involved. But, as one of the pioneers behind the zeitgeist of underground eating in Britain, MsMarmiteLover, explains, this is part of the appeal. “In a restaurant there’s a divide between the customer and the kitchen. I like the transparency of a home restaurant; you can visit the kitchen, chat to the chef … if things are busy and you need water, you can get it yourself. It breaks down the barriers that exist in usual restaurants.”

~ ALISON TYLER for THE INDEPENDENT

Nanaimo, BC– Competition is fierce to be one of the select products celebrities receive at awards ceremonies’ pre-show gifting events. Bella and Charlie Designs announces that they have been chosen for a posh, extremely coveted opportunity this fall. The Nanaimo company’s handmade bibs and baby blankets will be featured in a 2011 Emmy Awards pre-ceremony gifting suite taking place on September 16 and 17 in Los Angeles, California. The event is being organized by well-known party planner and designer to the stars, Jayneoni Moore. The location has yet to be announced.

A celebrity’s association with a product gives a huge boost to the product’s status and sales. Bella and Charlie Designs’ owners, sisters Jessica Davis and Maquinna Marriott, are thrilled with the prospect of increased exposure their products will receive. Davis embraces the opportunity, saying, “Both my sister and I couldn’t be happier about being asked to participate in this event. It has done wonderful things for many small businesses, and we are so excited about introducing Bella and Charlie Designs to these celebs!” Their bibs and blankets will be photographed with the celebrities who receive them.

This is the third such event in which the company has been invited to participate. Most recently, their bibs were included in a similar event for the Oscars. Attendees to this event included Minnie Driver, Kathleen Robertson, Larry Birkhead, Dot Marie Jones, Kelly Rutherford, Rachel Zoe, Nancy O’Dell, Samantha Harris, Esai Morales, Autumn Reeser, and Danica McKellar.

It is not yet confirmed which celebrities will be attending this event.

Currently, Bella and Charlie Designs operates as an online store where their handmade bibs and baby blankets are available, www.bellaandcharliedesigns.com. They can also be found at select retail stores in Nanaimo and Port Alberni.

About the Company

Bella and Charlie Designs is a Nanaimo, BC company started in 2009 by two sisters, Jessica Davis and Maquinna Marriott. The company was born when both sisters, who each had babies around the same time, found that cute bibs with personality and style were just not available. They decided to make their own. They have since sold their bibs and baby blankets online at www.bellaandcharliedesigns.com. Their products can also be found at Malilah Magoo’s Children’s Wear and Kit N. Caboodle Children’s Consignment in Nanaimo, and Klubhouse for Kids, Port Alberni.

Father’s Day is around the corner and I met with a wonderful man named, Andre Gerard, who has created a book that would make for a terrific gift for Dad – Fathers: A Literary Anthology. I was able to have an interview with Andre when he was in Nanaimo. Thanks Chapters!

Andre was a delight and I am pleased to say he is now a friend. I learned lots from him and his book is well researched. He contacted each and every one of the authors featured – Andre thought and thought about the stories featured. He has a good eye for meaningful Father’s stories – good and bad stories about Dad.

Fathers: A Literary Anthology is a literary treasure trove. Wise and wonderfully varied essays and poems by five Nobel laureates and by writers such as Margaret Atwood, Alan Bennet, Angela Carter, Virginia Woolf and Franz Kafka also make Fathers a powerful self-help manual for all children trying to understand and improve their relationships with their fathers. As well, the inspired musings in this collection will help all fathers—fathers young and fathers old—better appreciate the complexities of their role and the rich rewards it offers.

To order, please check out Andre’s website here… http://patremoirpress.com/.

Here is a note from my new friend, Rob, about his great shellfish products. I am ordering the scallops. Rob has promised me he would teach me how to eat an oyster properly. Support our local farmers… the ones on land and on sea.

Hello Everyone,

It’s that time again… June 15th will be the delivery date. There will be pickup points in Victoria, Nanaimo and Parksville. All orders need to be in by June 11, 2011.

Please note the new email— rob@barkleysoundshellfish.com New Blog coming soon……

Help me spread the Effing Word about BK Shellfish by forwarding this to friends, family, co workers and people you think would enjoy some fresh shellfish.

Barkley Sound Shellfish by Imperial Eagle Clam Co. Ltd.

1. Pacific Rim Petites Oysters (1.5-2.25″) 5 dozen bag = $25
A deep water cultured oyster that is intensely tumbled and suspended off rafts. (To view a video of the tumbling process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFdIBZxKVXw) Named after the Pacific Rim National Park that includes the Broken Group Islands, West coast Trail, and Long Beach!!

2. Effingham Extra Small Oysters (2.25-3″) 5 dozen bag = 25$
Another “tumbled” oyster that is the most popular of the Barkley Sound Shellfish!!! The Tumbling process occurs every 25-45 days. Great for “shooter” oysters with a little Tabasco, vodka, balsamic, etc.. Grown in Effingham Inlet and are the pride of the Barkley Sound Shellfish!!

3. Swale Rock Small Oysters (2.25-3″) 5 dozen bag = 30$
The biggest of the tumbled oysters. The tumbling process gives the oysters a hard shell and deep cup. It amplifies the beach hardening that traditional oysters get. The newest brand the Barkley Sound shellfish line and the feedback from the distributors that carry these has been exceptional.

4. Sechart Beach Oysters (3-7″) 3 dozen bag = 20$
These would be your typical Beach Oysters that are great on the BBQ. These are grown on our beach in Sechart Channel that borders the Broken Group Islands which are part of the Pacific Rim National Park…Doesn’t get anymore pristine!!!

5. Useless Inlet Manila Clams (15-20/pound) 5 pounds = 20$
Grown on our beach in the unique Useless Inlet. Useless Inlet’s opening is very small but the tidal flush it gets is phenomenal and that gives us great growth!!

6. Sechart Savoury Clams (15-20/pound) 5 pounds = 15$
This beach is located near the Broken Group Islands which are part of Pacific Rim National Park.

7. Barkley Sound Pacific Scallops (1-4/pound) 1 dozen = 25$
What can I say… Roe in scallops was our Christmas Eve Dinner!!!

Thank you and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

World No Tobacco Day event is being honoured on May 31st at Central Drugs in Lantzville, BC – 7186 Lantzville Rd from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Nanaimo’s Dr. Derek Poteryko will be on hand to talk about CRAVED and talk to people about becoming healthy non-smokers. Dr. Poteryko will also have his book for sale – he has decided to sell it for the price of a pack of cigarettes! Instead of $19.99, First You Smoked, Now You Live, will be only $10.00. It will certainly last longer than a pack of smokes and be more beneficial!

May 31st is World No Tobacco Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) designates this day to raise global awareness about the destructive nature of tobacco addiction (5 million people die every year from smoking). The WHO encourages those who smoke to abstain from smoking for 24 hours. It could end up being the start of something wonderful.

Derek Poteryko (Pot-er-ee-KO), MD, CCFP, FCFP, is pleased there is another day to help people be more mindful about the dangers of tobacco. Dr. Poteryko is a family physician based in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. He has a busy family practice, is the Medical Director for Central Island Smoking Intervention Clinic and is the author of the book First You Smoked. Now You Live. He has seen hundreds of people succeed in becoming healthy non-smokers and he hopes World No Tobacco Day will help more.

“Tobacco addiction touches all of us”, says Dr. Poteryko. “Whether it’s a loved one or friend who smokes or someone who has succumbed to the negative health effects of smoking. Over 4 million Canadians still smoke. At any given time it is estimated that 70% of those who smoke want to quit. Unfortunately, many of those who have tried qutting smoking have failed (cold turkey success rate is about 5%).” He goes on to say, “In the clinic, we use cognitive behavioural therapy to help people shift their thinking to a more resourceful state when they “crave” a cigarette. This “craving” is a normal part of the healing from tobacco addiction”.

Dr. Poteryko has some tips to use and to when you want to smoke, think “CRAVED no more”… with each letter in this mnemonic helping you become a nonsmoker for good!

C – Commited Action: Think of the commitment you have made to yourself to be free of this addiction for 24 hours.

R – Reasons: Remember your reasons of why you are doing this. It may be for health, it may be for your family or even for the financial reasons. With the money saved – make sure you go out and buy yourself something nice to reward yourself with this healthy behaviour.

A – Appreciate: To help shift thinking, every day think of three things in the past 24 hours that are good in your life or what went well in the last day.

V – Variety: Variety is the spice of life when it comes to healthy behaviour change. What works today, may not work tomorrow, but some other thought or action (other than smoking) will satisfy the craving.

E – Exercise: To exercise 20 minutes a day (if you have been sedentary then start with 5 minutes a day and work yourself up gradually), i.e. walking is cheap and effective.

D – Drink healthy. Drinking healthy fluids, e.g. water with a twist of lemon, green or white teas help with the transition of becoming a nonsmoker for good! Remember that someone who smokes 1 pack of cigarettes a day, puffs on a cigarette over 73,000 times a year.

More of these ideas can be found at the www.mediatherapy.ca website under Quit Quitting Exercises.

World No Tobacco Day is a great opportunity for those who smoke to try and become a nonsmoker for the day. Try a day, what do you have to lose? You have everything to gain. Your body, your wallet, your family/friends even your planet will thank you with amazing results. Since 1999, over 1 million Canadians have quit smoking.
There are many ways to quit smoking. There is the free 24 hour smokers’ helpline called Quit Now by phone at 1-877-455-2233 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-877-455-2233 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or online www.quitnow.ca. All of these community resources are at the hospital clinic’s website at www.CISIC.ca (which includes the free Quit Quitting movie featuring Dr. Poteryko). We are also THRILLED that the BC Government has recently announced that September 30th, 2011 that nicotine replacement therapies will be available to all British Columbian smokers at no cost and smoking cessation precription drugs will be covered under Pharmacare.http://www2.news.gov.bc.ca/news_releases_2009-2013/2011PREM0049-000518.htm These are all steps to help create a world of healthy non-smokers.

Lantzville’s Seaview Elementary School is a the hub of activity in this little town. For May and June we need some outside help for some things we are working on and would love your help to spread the word! If anyone has a bike they would LOVE out of their garage, Seaview School would be happy to give it a new home – it would be loved and appreciated! Below is more details about the bottle drive and the need for bikes. In both cases, Cheryl Morch, is our go-to-mom. Please contact her at ontheroadcheryl@gmail.com or call 250-933-4894.

Bottle drive:

When – Saturday June 4th 9-1

Where – Seaview Elementary School Parking lot

Bikes:

The triathlon club at Seaview Elementary School in Lantzville is looking for those old bicycles in your garage! We currently have 12 individuals, and 5 teams registered for the Qualicum Beach Triathlon, Sunday June 26th. Starting at the end of May, we train for cycling 1 day a week, running and swimming too. Our goal is to give every child the opportunity to participate. The principal of Seaview and myself thought it would be great for Seaview to have bikes and helmets available for kids to use and train with us, even if they aren’t doing the event. The more kids riding, the better! So if you have an old bike, even if it needs repairs, please contact Cheryl at ontheroadcheryl@gmail.com
