Downtown Vancouver’s Eastside Culture Crawl, the city’s annual artist’s studio open-house, has much to offer art enthusiasts. Artist Maya Massar’s project “SACRED – Images of the Divine Feminine” offers the viewer an opportunity for personal renewal as well. For those familiar with “The Crawl’s” usual fare, the unveiling of Massar’s “SACRED” will be a bit of a different flavor…Combining her experience in Shamanism and Energy Healing, her love of working with women and her artistic & poetic skills, Massar has created a series of unusual paintings and writings designed to take you on a healing journey of your own.

“SACRED is a series of 13 paintings – part portrait, part dream image, and part honoring of the 13 archetypal aspects of the feminine”, Massar says. “13 amazing women shared with me their personal sense of the Sacred. I took photos, then sat with these and allowed the photos to dream me into images for the paintings. I consciously used my training and experience in Shamanic healing to access the “Otherworld” while I worked – each woman’s portrait sung to me of Goddesses and Spirit Guardians – and I allowed these dream images to merge and dance with each woman’s image. The end result is a bit of a crazy mix, but full of my heart and those of the gracious women who participated.
Sacred is designed to stand simply as artwork, but also offers an opportunity to awaken your own energy system – as you look at each painting, there are pages to read, guiding your breath…my hope is that seeing the work will in some way bring viewers closer to their personal sense of the Sacred”.
The Eastside Culture Crawl opened in 1997. At that time there were only three participating studios – now, over 350 artists open their doors to the public during the three day event. Artists from the area between Main St., 1st Ave., Commercial Drive, and the Waterfront show and sell their work. From well-known artists to those just emerging, jewelers, sculptors, furniture makers, musicians, weavers, potters, writers, printmakers, photographers, and glassblowers offer visitors a glimpse into their creative worlds.
Massar’s SACRED project, along with 100 other artist’s works, will be on view at the Parker Street Studios (1000 Parker Street, Vancouver, BC). Friday, November 20th from 5:00-10:00 PM, Saturday November 21st & 22nd from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM. For more information: http://www.eastsideculturecrawl.com
